MESSAGE TO THE 132ND INTER-PARLIAMENTARY UNION ASSEMBLY

Hanoi, 28 March 2015

I am pleased to send greetings to the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly.  I commend your theme of “Turning Words into Action: The Sustainable Development Goals”, as well as the breadth of other issues that you will examine during this Hanoi Assembly, all of which complement our own efforts at the United Nations.

Member States are currently in the midst of the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda.  As agreed in Rio, in 2012, it will be applicable to all countries and will encompass the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, environmental and social.  The objective is an agenda that meets the needs of people and the planet.

The process of defining the seventeen goals that will be at the core of the post-2015 development agenda has been unprecedented.  It has galvanized the international community and brought renewed energy, excitement and optimism to the United Nations.  Progress is being closely monitored outside the UN. 

IPU132 adopts anti-terrorism bill

The 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly adopted a resolution on countering the evolving threats of terrorism, with two thirds of members voting for the motion during its plenary session yesterday.

The resolution, proposed by Australia and Belgium on March 29, calls for combating terrorism in any forms in line with the United Nations Charter and the fundamental principles of international law.

It strongly condemns fundraising activities in support of terrorism, urges countries to adopt a common strategy on population management and proposes measures to share information.

The document also asks for the use of legislative channels to enforce anti-terrorism resolutions adopted by the IPU Assembly and the United Nations Security Council.

The same day, the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade discussed and ratified the resolution: "Shaping new mechanisms on water resources management: to promote parliamentary action in water and sanitation issues".

Đại hội đồng IPU-132 thành công tốt đẹp

Sau năm ngày làm việc tích cực với tinh thần trách nhiệm cao, lễ bế mạc Đại hội đồng Liên minh Nghị viện thế giới lần thứ 132 (IPU-132) đã diễn ra tại Trung tâm Hội nghị quốc gia (Hà Nội) dưới sự chủ trì của Chủ tịch Liên minh Nghị viện thế giới Xa-bơ Chao-đu-ri; Chủ tịch QH Việt Nam, Chủ tịch IPU-132 Nguyễn Sinh Hùng.

Trước đó, phiên bế mạc của Đại hội đồng IPU-132 lần lượt thông qua các nghị quyết quan trọng của các Ủy ban thường trực về: Chiến tranh mạng, quản trị nguồn nước, chủ quyền quốc gia và quyền con người... Tiếp theo đó Đại hội đồng thông qua các báo cáo của các Ủy ban thường trực của Liên hợp quốc, vì sức khỏe, quyền của phụ nữ, hiệp hội các Tổng thư ký Nghị viện bảo vệ quyền của nghị sĩ, HIV/AIDS, quyền trẻ em, dân chủ trong kỷ nguyên kỹ thuật số, Báo cáo Nghị viện toàn cầu loại bỏ chiến tranh hạt nhân...

IPU members urged to realise SDGs

On 29 March, at the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Hanoi, MPs made a call for action on tackling the threat posed to global peace and security by cyber warfare, and on shaping a new system of water governance.

Chairman of the Vietnam National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Sinh Hung, elected President of the IPU-132, has called on parliaments across the globe to make strong commitment to effectively implementing the sustainable development goals (SDGs) over the next 15 years. While presiding over the first plenary session of the IPU Governing Council, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung suggested delegates focus their discussions on the role and missions of the parliaments to turn words into action for realising the SDGs.

On behalf of the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all distinguished guests and delegates from 166 member parliaments all over the world attending the 132nd IPU Assembly in Hanoi, a city of peace and hospitality.

Nhân sự kiện IPU-132, tại Hà Nội sẽ tái hiện nhiều lễ hội, phong tục truyền thống của đồng bào các dân tộc nhằm giới thiệu tinh hoa văn hóa của Việt Nam tới bạn bè quốc tế

Thông tin từ Bộ Văn hóa, Thể thao và Du lịch cho biết từ ngày 27-29/3, nhiều hoạt động tái hiện lễ hội, phong tục truyền thống của các dân tộc Việt Nam sẽ diễn ra tại Làng Văn hóa-Du lịch các dân tộc Việt Nam (Đồng Mô, Sơn Tây, Hà Nội). 

Đây là chuỗi sự kiện chào mừng Đại hội đồng Liên minh Nghị viện Thế giới lần thứ 132 (IPU-132) và nhân dịp Ngày Văn hóa các dân tộc Việt Nam 19/4.

IPU-132 - Good lessons have been learned from Vietnam

The 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-132) and its related meetings came to an end on the evening of April 1 with the adoption of the Hanoi Declaration.

National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung who is President of  IPU-132, said the IPU-132’s theme “Sustainable Development Goals: Turning words into action” won approval from delegates. Participants offered constructive feedback on draft resolutions for ratification, raising a highly-influential voice in the world community.

The assembly also offered lessons to the Vietnamese NA on building laws, monitoring and deciding on key country issues in which citizens always play the central role, he added, and vowed that the Vietnamese legislature would take prompt actions to carry out the IPU resolutions and align policies and laws with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. 

IPU-132: Use collective power of MPs for gender equality

In particular, the IPU-132 meeting on 28th March in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, will stress the critical importance of men and women working together for world without discrimination.

Women parliamentarians from across the world are calling upon all MPs to use their individual and collective power to make gender equality a reality for all women and girls.

Marking the 30th anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Meeting of Women Parliamentarians, the women MPs are underscoring the enormous potential for change that MPs hold as legislators, representatives and overseers of government.
A call to action - I am an MP. My power for women’s power - aims to harness the strength of the parliamentary collective to create a more gender equal world. In particular, the IPU meeting on 28th March in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, will stress the critical importance of men and women working together for world without discrimination.
